Player Background
Broadway leading man who returned to the mound with the Savannah Bananas
Derek Klena is the outlier in this player group for a reason: his baseball story cannot be separated from Broadway. Before becoming a Tony-nominated stage actor, he was a high-level pitcher in Southern California and spent time with the UCLA baseball program; the Bananas gave him a way to bring both careers onto the same field.
Background
Klena was a four-year varsity baseball letterwinner at South Hills High School and pitched a complete-game win in the 2009 CIF Southern Section Division III championship at Angel Stadium. He then walked on at UCLA as a right-handed pitcher before choosing theater, eventually building Broadway credits that include Wicked, Anastasia, Jagged Little Pill and Moulin Rouge!. His work in Jagged Little Pill earned a 2020 Tony nomination, and Savannah brought him back to competitive baseball in 2026 as a pitcher and performer.
