Player Background
Jake Lialios went from four seasons catching at Pomona-Pitzer to a 3-0 summer on the mound
Jake Lialios changed positions after college instead of simply moving up a level. Pomona-Pitzer had known him as a catcher; Tucson used him as a right-handed pitcher in 2020, and the conversion produced immediate results.
Background
Lialios spent four college seasons with Pomona-Pitzer, where the 2019 roster lists him as R/R and his bio identifies catcher as his primary position. That season he hit .225 with a .392 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage. The role changed after college. With the Tucson Saguaros in 2020, Lialios went 3-0 with a 3.68 ERA, 37 strikeouts and 16 walks in 29.1 innings. Tucson still gave him 13 at-bats, and he hit one home run, so the summer captured both sides of his transition.
